Her name was a big draw when she was named as an option to succeed Hope Hicks, the communications director. Mercedes Schlapp isn't in a comfortable position as White House strategist communications advisor. She must contend with a president who serves as his own communication director, multiple legal battles that could sabotage the White House's strategy for messaging and Cabinet secretaries embroiled in controversies of their own. Schlapp has kept her eye on the goal, coordinating policies together with White House staff from the Political and Legislative Affairs team and the policy shop, and broader communications. To date, her focus has been on topics such as security in schools, the opioid epidemic, infrastructure, trade as well as other topics. Schlapp's current job doesn't involve much contact with reporters. In March, her name was floated as a candidate who would replace Hope Hicks at the Communications Director job. It has been a battle that has been brutal. Schlapp's allies and Tony Sayegh started arguing in the media. Schlapp told that the Washington Examiner that she spoke with Sayegh about an article that had been published in the past about him.
